TS–013 Testing high capacity weighing instruments to maximum capacity

This policy provides instructions on testing high capacity weighing instruments to their maximum capacity.

Policy

Trading Standards' expectation is that all high capacity weighing instruments are tested to their maximum capacity.

However, there are circumstances where this is not practicable, and this policy can be applied when testing instruments with a maximum capacity > 40,000 kg, as per table 1 below:

Maximum capacity of the instrument Minimum capacity to be tested to
≤ 40,000 kg Maximum capacity of the instrument
> 40,000 kg Within 10% of the maximum capacity of the instrument

Further to the above, where an instrument with a maximum capacity of > 40,000 kg is not tested to maximum capacity, the reason(s) why a test load equal to maximum capacity could not be achieved during testing must be noted on the test sheet.

Where the requirements of this policy are not met, the accredited person who tested the instrument may be subject to a non-compliance action.
