World Metrology Day and Wellington laboratory update

Information on World Metrology Day and the reopening of the Wellington laboratory.

Trading Standards are pleased to confirm the official reopening of the Wellington laboratory on 20 May 2021, which coincidentally coincides with the World Metrology Day event being hosted by the Measurement Standards Laboratory at Callaghan Innovations on the same day.

Since the Kaikōura earthquakes late in 2016, the Trading Standards laboratory in Wellington has been out of action. The initial quake and subsequent tremors led to the building, where the laboratory was housed, being condemned (and set to be demolished) due to asbestos in the roof.

The laboratory has moved to a new space within the Callaghan Innovation site, which has had to be prepared with the necessary equipment and facilities. The reopening means that the Trading Standards team are now in a position to again offer limited metrology verification services in the Wellington area to our Accredited Persons.

World Metrology Day

This day, which is celebrated around the world annually on 20 May, aims to raise awareness of metrology, which Trading Standards are in integral part of. If you wish to join us at the free event, which includes numerous presentations, technical talks and laboratory tours, please see the below news article for more information.
